Because of our historic status, Carderock residents can qualify for a 20% state income tax credit through the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) for some maintenance expenses.
Updates that may be covered include:
- Window replacement
- Wood siding
- New furnace and AC systems
The fine print
A 20% state tax credit is a good thing. But it's not as easy to get as you may hope.
- An MHT application must be approved before work starts.
- The application is time-consuming. You'll need to describe all the work you plan, and include photos of the entire exterior and affected interior rooms.
- After you submit the application it can take a month or more to get approval.
For more information, visit the Trust website. You'll find instructions, forms, and questions and answers. We've found Trust staff to be friendly and helpful on the phone.
Many thanks to Carderock resident John Karlik email@example.com, who has offered to share his successful application for a new roof and 11 skylights as a guide for others.
